今回のツアーは、今後世界遺産に選定されるであろう10数か所の遺跡がある明日香の地を背景に、万葉集から都があった時代の歌をセレクトし、英訳ガイドブックを作成し、ツアー中、万葉集の研究家 大森亮尚氏と万葉集に興味のあるアメリカ人翻訳家で通訳のダン・ルフィ氏が同行し解説します。
This tour will be based around Asuka, which has more than a dozen sites that are expected to be selected as World Heritage sites in the future. A selection of poems from the Manyoshu related to the period when the capital was located in Asuka have been included in the guidebook along with an English translation, while a scholar of the Manyoshu, Akihisa Omori, and a translator named Dan Luffey provide commentary.

1947年、神戸市生まれ。上智大学大学院博士課程修了。大学院の頃より民俗採集調査に全国を歩き回る。
専攻は日本民俗学をベースにした上代文学・芸能史の研究。霊魂信仰研究や怨霊研究を通じて日本人とは何かを問い続けている。武庫川女子大学、兵庫大学教授などを経て、現在、古代民俗研究所代表。著書に『日本の怨霊』(平凡社)、『悲のフォークロア 海のマリコへ』(東方出版)、『本朝三十六河川 川に流れる文学』、『風呂で読む万葉恋歌』(世界思想社)など。
Commentary: Foklorist Akihisa Omori Profile
Born in Kobe in 1947. Completed a doctorate at Sophia University. Since his postgraduate days, he’s travelled all over Japan conducting folklore research.
His main area of study is ancient Japanese literature history and performing arts, based around Japanese folklore. He continues to ask himself what it means to be Japanese through his studies on souls, faith, and vengeful spirits. Previously a professor at Mukogawa Women’s University and Hyogo University, he currently serves as the representative of the Ancient Folklore Research Institute. His publications include “Vengeful Spirits of Japan” (Heibonsha), “Folkore of Sorrow: To Mariko of the Sea” (Toho Shuppan), “36 Rivers of the Imperial Court: Literature Flowing in the Waters” and “Man’yōshū Love Poems to Read in the Bath” (Sekai Shisosha).

1987年、アメリカ合衆国ペンシルべニア州生まれ。
カリフォルニア大学卒業。京都大学留学。京都芸術大学の映画研究専門修士課程卒業。10代のころから日本の歴史や文化、文学に興味を示し大学で日本語を専攻し、京大の卒業論文として、司馬遼太郎の「燃えよ剣」の英訳。人文知識・国際業務の就労ビサを取得。その後、京都造形芸術大学院の修士課程を修了。現在、フリーランス翻訳家。著書(英訳書)に「The Fiend with Twenty Faces」（怪人二十面相／江戸川乱歩作／Kurodahan Press出版）「Manga Poverty」（漫画貧乏／佐藤秀峰作／Manga Reborn出版）「Dear Ambivalence」（ディア・アンビバレンス／末弘秀孝作／アトリエサード出版）がある。
Dan Luffey Profile
Born in 1987 in Pennsylvania. Graduated from University of California Santa Barbara, also studied at Kyoto University and received a master’s in film studies from Kyoto University of Art and Design. Has studied Japanese history and culture since his teens, and produced an English translation of Shiba Ryotaro’s “Moe Yo Ken” for his undergraduate thesis. Currently works in Japan under a Humanities visa as freelance translator. Also produced English translations for the following books: The Fiend with Twenty Faces (Kurodahan Press), Manga Poverty (Manga Reborn), and Dear Ambivalence (Atelier Third).
